thing is, boon prots pack the max possible healing power within the smallest package, ie, only 1 character. its a build that does pretty well under constant pressure, hence needing the energy management to be able to keep on healing/protting a lot constantly on long matches. thatd explain their use in 4on4 (tell me a group without one, spikers excluded..) and gvg

Boon Prots don't have as easy a time in direct healing. Compare them in the first zone of Draon's Lair, where there is constant degen and thus the prot part of the boon prot is next to useless. 7 energy for a 100 point heal or 5 energy for a 100 point heal, with one extra pip of energy regen (which starts to add up if you're not spamming spells).
The advantage of a boon prot is that they are able to heal AND mitigate damage (prot) in a way that they are able to keep themselves alive against most of what is out there. Boon Prots are not the best unconditional healers, they just happen to be ideal in PvP (and much of PvE) where they match up well against so much of what is out there (and thus the "conditional" part of their healing happens to take effect nearly every time).
